Fuel prices… W.T.F?

Today I filled up at my usual Shell station, a station i remember being slightly aghast at having to pay 75p/litre less than three years ago.  Today I paid £1.16/litre, now I realise the price of stuff does go up but *piss off*, seriously.

Now, some people will claim that it’s appropriate given that a) Oil is running out and b) fossil fuels are ‘bad’ and we should all cycle, walk or use public transport to get to work.

Let me address this view… Oil is running out? Bollocks, ok yes, it’s finite but it’s always been finite, estimates on how much is left vary because these estimates are made up by the media or guesstimated by the people who want us to stop driving, either way it’s not going to dry up anytime soon.

Fossil fuels are bad?  Yes, probably, but so is the majority of ‘modern’ living, however our pollution levels are significantly lower than 100 years ago.  I hear a knob in a flowery shirt shout that car contribute towards the green house effect?  Well yes, but nowhere near (and i mean so far away from) natural processes and not a patch on how much ‘developing’ countries do.

Cars are unnecessary as commuting tools? Maybe for some, especially some who live and work in cities, but for the millions that live in the suburbs and work in industrial areas they are the only feasible way to travel to and from work given how shit our public transport is.  I work 15 miles away from home, and thanks to the M4 it takes me about 20 minutes each way in a car, and slightly quicker on my bike.  If I bussed it to my local station, then train’d into Reading and bussed it back out to my office it would take slightly less than two hours.

I want the expense and effort I have taken to reduce my energy usage and waste in other areas to offset the cost of going to work because I *cant* do without transport, and the increase in travel costs will only serve to raise my salary expectations, which is a cost my company will have to pass on to it’s customers, and eventually the public will bear the cost (as with almost every business at the end of the chain is joe bloggs buying a product or service.

I wouldn’t have an argument if the government started to invest in industry to produce alternative ‘fuels’, infact I’d welcome a short term rise in my cost of living to look forward to buying a car/bike that cost me and the environment significantly less.  Alas that isn’t gonna happen because it’d cost our government dearly and at the end of the day all this is about is money, they don’t give a shit about the environment, that’s just the current political excuse.

Lastly before anyone suggests I get a job closer to home, or live closer to work, you’ve missed the point regarding how residential and industrial sectors work outside of our cities.

Frankly all this is even enough for me to consider buying a scooter, 100mpg.

Not happy slacking

Most people would love a high paid job where they don’t need to work all that hard, where the boss is great, company benefits are good and most of your peers are nice friendly people.

However I seem to have a retarded gene in there, I can’t just tick along happily, watching youtube, counting the minutes till ‘hometime’ like so many others.  I like things a bit screwed up, tight deadlines, angry customers and difficult technical problems.  In that environment, surrounded by good people I flourish.

So once again I change my job, there is nothing wrong with my current one, it just doesn’t give me that ‘oooompf’ I need to enjoy my day at work.

I’ll be moving house too as the new job carries the same commute as my partner’s and brings us closer to my kids.  So everyone is a winner.

Promoted

Well I got promoted at work, I am now the ‘Manager’ of my small team of four.  This isn’t the first time I have managed a team but I was still feeling a bit hesitant at the prospect when my Boss first mentioned it.

You see I have a very aggressive nature, or more accurately ‘passionate’, I have very little tolerance for slackers, especially when they hold up progress of something I am responsible for.  In today’s caring and shrink wrapped employment world a Manager is meant to be caring and considerate to mitigating factors…  where as I normally just end up ranting a lot and wanting to fire said slacker ;)

Thankfully I have been saved from worry on two counts, firstly my team is good, technically and on the most part, socially.  Secondly I am primarily responsible for directing the systems solutions and day to day priorities and can defer the personnel issues to my Boss where needs be.  So all is good!

Of course this means changes for me… I need to crack my morning problems and get my arse into work on time (this has been getting slowly better), I must stop breaking the dress code and try and lead by example.  I also guess I should put some after-hours effort into planning, to make sure I don’t make a complete tit of myself and my team ;)

So is this my first step towards responsibility and resultant loss of technical expertise, or a one way trip to oblivion…  time will tell.

DOFs

When I was younger my Dad had a nickname for slow O.A.P. drivers, DOFs, or Dothering Old Farts.  This morning I had two encounters with DOFs in as many miles.  The first old dear decided that she didn’t need to check for traffic and pulled out infront of me causing me to cross into the on-coming lane in order to avoid her (I wasn’t going fast but it was bloody close).  The second one was another ‘little old lady’ deciding to go all the way around the roundabout in the outside lane, whilst indicating left (i.e. to turn off).

Now I don’t want to sound age-ist but these little blue haired disaster zones should not be on the road, especially not with more blind old gits in the car with them.  They have more potential to cause death and destruction than a gang of rappers doing a drive-by shooting.

So I rather think the gov’ should retest these little old ‘gansta’ ladies at yearly intervals after the age of about 50, and if they can’t see over the wheel, drive at 50% of the speed limit, have the mirror tilted so they can keep an eye on ‘tiddles’ in the back, or infact do anything these dangerous little old bastards are famous for, they should lose their licence.

Today was a lucky escape… and i’m glad because what is more frustrating than crashing into a car driven by a dangerous old biddy, is the fact that society would then look down on me for giving the old bat a good kicking for putting me at risk :)

Easy commute

I decided to drive in today as I need to pick the nippers up tonight and my other half is working from home.  I left a little earlier expecting to be stuck in traffic jams and whatnot but it was almost completely clear.  Typical really, if I had been late leaving I bet I would have been going at 5mph all the way ;)

Anyway… Laptop should arrive today, finally, after much waiting…  Mind you all the waiting has made me much more excited about it, bit sad eh ;)
