Writing a F1 game

I am busy writing an online Formula One management game and am looking for Beta testers.  If this sort of thing floats your boat then head on over to f1game.org and sign up.

Not happy slacking

Most people would love a high paid job where they don’t need to work all that hard, where the boss is great, company benefits are good and most of your peers are nice friendly people.

However I seem to have a retarded gene in there, I can’t just tick along happily, watching youtube, counting the minutes till ‘hometime’ like so many others.  I like things a bit screwed up, tight deadlines, angry customers and difficult technical problems.  In that environment, surrounded by good people I flourish.

So once again I change my job, there is nothing wrong with my current one, it just doesn’t give me that ‘oooompf’ I need to enjoy my day at work.

I’ll be moving house too as the new job carries the same commute as my partner’s and brings us closer to my kids.  So everyone is a winner.

World of Warcraft

As some of you may know, I am somewhat of a fan of World of Warcraft, to the point that it kinda approached addiction (like thousands of others across the world).  Well, I stopped playing a while back and re-found all my old escapes from responsibility and work ;)

Anyway… I fell of the wagon and started playing again, this time with a new character (a paladin) called ‘verne’… crap name eh?  well he was originally one of my ‘mules’.  Anyway I may as well blog about wow, because bugger all else is going on at the moment that is worth writing about.

Azeroth claims another victim.

Promoted

Well I got promoted at work, I am now the ‘Manager’ of my small team of four.  This isn’t the first time I have managed a team but I was still feeling a bit hesitant at the prospect when my Boss first mentioned it.

You see I have a very aggressive nature, or more accurately ‘passionate’, I have very little tolerance for slackers, especially when they hold up progress of something I am responsible for.  In today’s caring and shrink wrapped employment world a Manager is meant to be caring and considerate to mitigating factors…  where as I normally just end up ranting a lot and wanting to fire said slacker ;)

Thankfully I have been saved from worry on two counts, firstly my team is good, technically and on the most part, socially.  Secondly I am primarily responsible for directing the systems solutions and day to day priorities and can defer the personnel issues to my Boss where needs be.  So all is good!

Of course this means changes for me… I need to crack my morning problems and get my arse into work on time (this has been getting slowly better), I must stop breaking the dress code and try and lead by example.  I also guess I should put some after-hours effort into planning, to make sure I don’t make a complete tit of myself and my team ;)

So is this my first step towards responsibility and resultant loss of technical expertise, or a one way trip to oblivion…  time will tell.

Expecting new laptop

I ordered a new laptop from Rock a few weeks back, and as it’s a brand new, all singing and dancing model I have had to wait a while for it. As I have recently changed jobs I have lost my old work laptop and am currently suffering with a G4 powerbook… a nice little machine but still not worthy of much WoW ;)
