Insomnia

I’ve never been able to manage well on less than 8 hours sleep.  Less than 4 (without any interruptions) and I’m unable to function - I can’t drive and am uncharactistically tetchy.  Now normally, I could sleep through a nuclear blast: I can usually nod off regardless of noise, light and even comfort.  Even when I’m ill I just “sleep through it” (albeit slightly more figity than my normal corpselike stillness).  So what happened last night?  I slept for about an hour and then was very, very awake. After watching the clock tick ahead minute by minute (no easy feat when you have a focal distance of 4 inches without glasses) for an hour, I decided to get up and have a drink and read for a bit.  After another hour I was more awake, and also grouchy as the incessent random blue flashing of the Wii in standby mode was driving me up the wall.  Back to bed and I was still no closer to a blissful slumber.

Of course, by that stage, I’d wound myself up so much that I had no chance.  Part of me considered getting up and going to work, or working on my thesis.  I think my brain was too active :(.  I finally manged to get about 3 hours but am in a miserable mood and very tired.  I guess there’s far too much going on in my head to relax properly and it’s all work related… but that’s a whole other post waiting to happen….

Side splitting stuff

A few years ago, whilst working at AWE I sneezed! WOW, I hear you say, what an event.  The sneeze however saw me doubled up in pain on the floor, screaming like a girl and clutching my side.  Now because this was a MOD site all the on-site emergency services were called (including police and fire brigade ;) ) and I got carted away to the medical center.  I had it in my mind that I had broken a rib or two as the pain felt similar to my last bike crash but it turned out it was a torn muscle, probably my left ‘Lat’ (Latissimus dorsi).

So… the last few days my side had been aching and I had forgotten about the above.  It was only giving me a bit of jip when i coughed, so I just ignored it.  Then when sitting at home one evening messing about on the computer (you can guess what’s coming right?), I sneezed and felt a ‘pop’ inside me and again much pain, much tears to eyes.

This all happened last night and today it’s still painful, but i don’t feel like it’s going to cripple me with each cough.  I think this is all showing me that it’s time to stop promising to get fit again and actually do it.

Alarm Clocks

Trying to face up to my long term problem of not being able to a) fall asleep and then b) wake up for work, I thought I’d attack (b) first.  I have used the same alarm clock since school, the seven-segment brick once sold in droves by Argos with that lovely ‘MEEP MEEP MEEP MEEP’ sound that we all know and hate.

The biggest problem is that all sound based alarm clocks are easily ignorable to people like me.  I can put it in another room and rise, walk, turn off and return to bed without even remembering it.

PHILIPS PREVIEWS NEW PRODUCTS; LONDON; 3 OCTOBER 2006; Royal Philips Electronics today unveiled new and innovative concepts based on its ‘sense and simplicity’ brand positioning at the 2006 Philips Simplicity Event. Philips also revealed at the event, a sample of potential products nearing market readiness that have evolved from earlier Simplicity concepts. PHOTO:

So, current popular thought is that we wake more naturally with the aid of simulated sun rise (followed by an inevitable BEEP BEEP BEEP).

Personally I’m happy to give it a go and am looking around for a solution that not only fits the ‘light’ requirement, but is also cool ;)

One possible is the Philips ‘Artificial wall mounted Sun’ seen in this picture.  Click on it for more information and a look at other crazy shit they have come up with. I guess the question is, am I quite daft enough to mount my own Sun on the bedroom wall just to get into work on time?

itv.com/f1 - Hamilton puts heartbreak behind him

I, along with a lot of British F1 fans spent most of the morning after the race swearing at things.  A simple error of judgement took our boy out of the race, a race which looked certain to secure Hamilton his first (of a hopeful many) Grand Prix Championship in his rookie season.

lewis Total kudos to Hamilton’s attitude, he appears to have shrugged it off as ‘one of those things’, he took time to publicly  praise his team.  Which is more than can be said of Alonso, despite still being in the running, continued to team-bash and question the integrity of McLaren.  What a fool.

So, all eyes on Brazil for the final decider, I for one hope that Hamilton not only gets the championship but also secures it with a race win!

Onwards

Well, back in the UK and feeling pretty damn good about it.  I got my old job back and started on Thursday, faced a fair few friendly but very confused old friends but on the whole i have been welcomed back and all is returning to normal.  However i really am glad it’s the weekend, this past week has been tiring in the extreme and I need to reset.

mgzsMy other news is that I have decided to stop commuting by motorcycle, not only is it fairly boring (not my idea of good biking) but it’s also just getting too dangerous (or maybe I am getting too old).  So I have bought a car, a nice, fairly young MG ZS. Perhaps not the most WOW car but I think it looks good and it’s comfy, well equipped and fairly fuel efficient.  I’ll jot down a review on it in a few days when I have more of a chance to get some more pictures and drive it a bit ;)

So onto the weekend, my kids are over which will be fun, and the F1 GP is on, the penultimate round, and if Lewis Hamilton can get into the points AND beat Alonso then he will become the first rookie F1 world champion ever and he’s a Brit!

Exciting stuff!
